It's a big Spiral Arm, and the scarred man, Donavan buigh, has gone missing in it, upsetting the harper Mearana's plans for a reconciliation between her parents. Bridget ban, a Hound of the League, doubts that reconciliation is possible or desirable; but nonetheless has dispatched agents to investigate the disappearance.

The powerful Ravn Olafsdottr, a Shadow of the Names, slips into Clanthompson Hall to tell mother and daughter of the fate of Donovan buigh. In the Long Game between the Confederation of Central Worlds and the United League of the Periphery, Hound and Shadow are mortal enemies; yet a truce descends between them so that the Shadow may tell her tale. There is a struggle in the Lion's Mouth, the bureau that oversees the Shadows - a clandestine civil war of sabotage and assassination between those who would overthrow Those of Name and the loyalists who support them. And Donovan, one-time Confederal agent, has been recalled to take a key part, willingly or no.

In the Lion's Mouth (2011) is the third SF novel in the Scarred Man series, following Up Jim River. The initial work in this sequence is The January Dancer.

In the previous volume, Mearana came back to Jehovah to talk to the Scarred Man. He was eating and drinking breakfast, but was pleased to see her. She told him of the disappearance of Bridget ban.

Her mother had come home from a voyage and then left two weeks later. She wrote that she would be back soon. But it has been almost a metric year.

The Hounds have tracked her as far as they could. Now Mearana is going to search from her mother. She asks the Scarred Man to accompany her.

In this novel, the Scarred Man sits within a Bar on Jehovah. He has tales to tell. Once he had been an agent of the Confederacy of Central Worlds, but now he has multiple personalities in his head.

Mearana of Dangchao -- AKA Lucia D. Thompson -- is an ollamh, a master harper. She is the daughter of Bridget ban and Donovan.

Bridget ban -- AKA Francine Thompson -- is a Hound of the Ardry, an agent of The Particular Service of the United League of the Periphery. Donovan -- the original personality of the Scarred Man -- had met Bridget ban twenty years ago.

Graceful Bintsaif is a junior Hound. She is part of Bridget ban's household.

Ravn Olafsdottr is a Shadow of the Confederacy. She is working for Gidula.

Dawshoo Yishohrann is the leader of the rebel shadows.

Gidula is an old Confederal Shadow.

Oschous Dee Karnatika is the field marshal of the rebel shadows.

Geshler Padaborn was a revolutionary leader some decades ago.

In this story, Ravn comes to Dangchao Waypoint with a story. Bridget ban sots her coming toward Clanthompson Hall, but loses sight of her in the maintenance yard. When she enters the sitting room two teasers and a knife are pointed at her.

Bridget sits Ravn on a sofa and listens to her tale. Ravn says that she had abducted Donovan on Jericho and flew away in a monoship. He was a very difficult captive.

First Donovan awoke too early. He talked over the situation with his eight other personas and then broke out of the room. Ravn was waiting outside with a teaser when they emerged.

After feeding their body in the small refectory, Ravn locked them in the ward room. Fudir picked the lock and opened the door. Ravn was waiting in the hallway.

Ravn asks them where they expect to go. She has installed eyes and motion sensors throughout the ship. Then she returns them to the bunk room.

They are restless in the tiny room and twisted on the thin and short pad. Something clicks and they fall out of bed into a space between the walls. The ship stolen by Ravn is definitely a smuggler's vessel.

Eventually, Ravn takes them to Henrietta, where the rebel Triumvirate tries to talk them into joining the rebellion. But they are stubborn and Dawshoo and Gidula leave him in the hands of Oschous and Ravn.

During the telling, Bridget, Graceful and Mearana ask many questions and interject varied comments. Graceful is young and inexperienced, so she is more opinionated. Bridget tells her that she will learn sooner or later that the universe is not black or white, but more often gray.

Mearana composes her ballad as the tale progresses. She has Donovan and his avatars down pat, but does not quite sense the personality of Ravn. Worse yet, Ravn has not yet told them the fate of Donovan and company.

This tale shows more of the history of the Commonwealth and its various technical triumphs. It introduces rebel shadows and their conspiracy. It also reveals many loyalist shadows and a few Names.

Donovan holds out until the end. The next installment in this sequence is On the Razor's Edge.

Highly recommended for Flynn fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of the far future, covert ops, and Gaelic humor. Read and enjoy!

In the Lion Mouth Tales of the Spiral Arm Book 3 (Audible Audio Edition) Michael F Flynn J Paul Guimont Audible Studios Books Reviews

In the Lion's Mouth continues the tale begun in The January Dancer and Up Jim's River. Mr. Flynn's foray into space opera is still in fine form--he is having a lot of fun here, and it shows. The pacing is great, and the book roars along. While you know Ravn, the Shadow agent who is telling the tale, survives the adventure, nothing else is certain, and there is a high degree of suspense all the way through. I saw Mr. Flynn at a convention last year, and he described The January Dancer as the "Hobbit" of this series, which implies that The Lion's Mouth is the second book of a trilogy. That means the next book will wrap things up, and I can't wait. This tale is quite satisfying all by itself, but it definitely leaves you wanting more. Donovan, with his warring personalities, is one of the most entertaining characters I have encountered in some time, and Bridget Ban and his daughter the harpist are not far behind him. I would recommend this entire series to anyone who loves good intelligent adventure stories, with a strong sense of wit and fun!
This novel is the third part of the tetralogy started with The January Dancer (2008). The story continues with Up Jim River, and then with In the Lion's Mouth and finally (so far) with On the Razor's Edge (2013). I enjoyed The January Dancer very much. The same applies to the next three books in this series. I also read Eiffelheim by Michael Flynn. An excellent novel. Mr. Flynn manages to write very entertaining and engaging stories that are a strange combination of far future space opera hard science fiction with societies and characters that seem very medieval, and a feeling for describing attractive duplicitous and murderous characters involved in layers and layers of deception and intrigue that at times seem taken from Alexander Dumas novels. it is a galaxy-spanned civilization governed by some very powerful and secretive characters known as the Names, who base their domination in forgotten very high technology that they have kept for themselves. These so-called Names seem loosely based in Zelazny's gods in Lord of Light.
Ravn Olafsdottr creeps into Clanthompson Hall to tell her story of the disappearance of Donavan buigh. It is a disappearance she may be responsible for, that Donavan may have cooperated with, and that may be permanent. In the familiar story-within-a-conversation style found in The January Dancer and Up Jim River, Ravn unfolds her tale. Her listeners include the Mistress of the Hall Bridget ban, the harper Mearana, and Graceful Bintsaif, a junior Hound. They must decide how much to trust Ravn and how much of her story to believe.

The story begins with Donovan on board a small spacecraft returning him to his planet of origin. He meets people who fought both with and against him and who remember parts of his life that he does not. Donovan must understand the struggle between factions in an underground army and decide who to help and who to trust.

This book carries forward the story of the previous two volumes in the Tales of the Spiral Arm series. It makes plain that there will be at least a fourth book. It is rewarding to learn more of Donovan's past and more about the Confederation of Central Worlds than has previously been revealed. On the other hand, the story-within-a-story technique is not the fresh surprise it was in The January Dancer. And the scope of the action seems much smaller than in the past. It no longer feels as if the fate of worlds and peoples hangs in the balance.

It is a good story but nowhere near becoming a great one. I will read the next book in the series out of loyalty and hope for a return to the sparkle and novelty of the first book. My appreciation of the author, Michael Flynn, is undiminished, however. My next read will be In the Country of the Blind. I've heard good things...
